The offerings available from the Alte Post are as varied as the hotel and the region around it. The people who live here have also been affected by the interaction of three cultures _ of Slovenia, of Italy and of the German speaking world.

We have something for every taste and we believe that we have something that will suit you. Choose for yourself and you will be well-pleased by what the Feistritz, the Gail valley and, above all, the Alte Post has to offer.

The Gailtal valley is also known far and wide for the beautiful horses bred in the area. Particularly the village of Feistritz an der Gail has a long tradition in this field. Also closely associated with horse breeding and a well-known feature of the area is the unique "Kufenstechen" or "barrel race". This takes place on Whit Monday in Feistritz.

The proximity of the Alte Post to one of Carinthia's loveliest skiing areas, the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, and to several other winter sports playgrounds such as the Dreiländereck, where Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet, or the pistes at Lussari and Tarvisio, make it an ideal base for the winter sports fan. You can ski on a different piste every day, if you fell like it!

Beginners can make use of a special lift with artificial snow right here in Feistritz an der Gail. And, of course, cross-country skiers will enjoy the excellent trails along the Gail river and around the village of Feistritz. In Achomitz, the neighbouring village and former home of the Olympic champion, Karl Schnabl, there are even ski-jump facilities.

We attached a lot of importance to making sure that the Alte Post had a pleasantly open design. We are not one of those places that caters just for the tourist market or mainly targets the local population. Instead, the Alte Post is meant to be open to everyone. We would hope that anyone who wants to can enjoy the cultural riches and varied attractions of the area.

And if you feel like a real break from the world, there are plenty of options for spending a few hours – or even a few days – on your own, either at the Alte Post or in the surrounding countryside.

The alpine meadows of the Gailtal valley are a real highlight for many visitors. The Feistritzer and Achomitzer alpine meadows are particularly extensive and offer wide views over the Gailtal valley as far as Slovenia and Italy.

And if you climb the Oisterniggipfel you can even sea the distant peak of the Grossglockner on a clear day. If the air is very clear, you can sometimes glimpse the Adriatic in the distance! Pay us a visit and see for yourself!

At the Alte Post, we deliberately decided not to install a swimming pool as we felt it there was simply no need! This is because only 7 km away at Vorderberg there is a wonderful "eco-pool" run by the local St. Stefan municipality. The closest lake, the Pressegger See, is only around 15 minutes' drive away, while the next closest – the Faaker See – can be reached in about 20 minutes.

And if you fancy a dip in the ocean, your car will bring you to the Adriatic in only 90 minutes or so. There you can choose between the sandy beaches on the Italian side of the border, or the rockier coast of Slovenia.

Feistritz an der Gail is an excellent starting point for some fascinating cycle tours. You can cycle to lakes such as the Pressegger See or ride towards Warmbad Villach through the unique scenery that resulted from landslides, in the "Schütt" area of the Dobratsch nature reserve. A bike-ride to Tarvisio and back or a mountain circuit over the Predil Pass, for example, are also warmly recommended. For those who really like to get "off road", there are some fantastic mountain bike trails in the area. The options available for cyclists and hikers, in fact, are almost unlimited.

Close to the Alte Post you can find the right route for every cyclist, whether it's a demanding ascent up the mountainside or a gentle ride along unspoilt nature trails. We have plenty of cycles and mountain bikes available for use by our guests.

On the conjunction of three different cultures, the roman, the slavic and the german, one can enjoy the historically distinct landscape. Visit historic sites in Friaul and Slovenia, enjoy the traditional cuisine of each region or simply enjoy the beautiful nature af the Gail Vally.
